About Our Herd
Our management system utilizes a south facing shed with bedding pack for housing. Grass hay is available all year, and we perform daily paddock moves within a phytochemically diverse pasture during grazing season. Although we are not certified organic, chemicals have not been used on our farm since we moved here. Supplemental grain, when fed, is a mixture of certified organic and non-GMO grain that we make ourselves consisting of steam rolled barley, whole oats (organic) , and roasted soybeans (organic) for added protein in the winter. Milking cows are generally fed around 7# of this mix per day when not on high quality pasture. In addition, access to 8 free choice vitamin/mineral combinations plus sodium bicarbonate, diatomaceous earth and plain salt is a vital part of metabolic and reproductive health.
The girls are milked once daily in the morning with a NuPulse bucket system and are allowed to have their calves with them until weaning, which is typically from 3-4 months of age. They do very well on this regimen which ensures that the calves are raised in a normal social environment with an optimum immune system.
All of our animals are homozygous for the A2 beta casein protein (meaning they are all A2A2). The herd has been tested negative for Tuberculosis, MAP (Johne’s disease) and Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV, or Lymphoma) and being a closed herd, we have chosen at this time to take a respite from vaccinating our animals. If you choose to purchase an animal from us, we will be happy to offer traditional vaccines prior to transit if that is something you require. Please check with your veterinarian for health testing requirements for your state if you live outside of Wisconsin.
